The Kansas City Power defeated The Minnesota Freeze in the 2nd Annual Peter Chung Challenge!
With a hot forecast of 95F, the K ansas C ity Power played the Minnesota Freeze on Saturday at Blue River Park. The Power picked a very strong side with many strong players left off of the squad. Congratulations to Micah Fritz on his debut and to Neil MacEachern for earning a starting position in the middle. The Power got off to a good start and were very aggressive at the football. A strong bustling goal from Brady Phillips started the scoring for the Power, but some missed opportunities within range kept the Power from a bigger lead at the first break which the Power led 3.2-20 to 0.1-1. CHF Brady Phillips and CHB Geoff Trumbull started taking control of the game, with some good running from Derek Clopton and Derek Heathcoate, and a solid showing from Rover Mike Brookshire.
The Freeze was competitive all day and had a lot more of the ball in the 2nd quarter doubling the shots-on of the Power, but still trailed 4.3 – 27 to 0.5 – 5 at the half time break. The Power implemented some changes to start the 3rd quarter to try and regain overall control including Mathias Amick playing the half back flank, Matt Unger to a typical shutdown task, and Mat Kiefer returning to Half Back Flank after a knock to the leg. The work rate from on-ballers Ryan Richardson, Jeremy Wilson, and Neil MacEachern, and runners David Fritz, Carlos Santa Cruz , Caleb Dougherty and Scott Myers was incredible in the heat. At the 3rd quarter break, KC Power lead 5.6 – 36 Freeze 2.7 – 19.
Geoff Trumbull and Wes Edwin continued to repel attacks from the Freeze in the backline and Brady owned the ball at CHF finishing with many quality marks, 2 goals, and 1 behind for the day. The last quarter saw 2 quick goals from the Power to take the game beyond doubt. Final score, KC Power 8.9 – 57 to MN Freeze 3.9 – 27.
